The Quiet Beauty of a Cottage Kitchen Window
Cozy Cottage Kitchen Window
Good Morning Cottage Friends!
Here is what’s happening at the cottage today. . .
Today, we are admiring one of my favorite gifts in a home, a kitchen window over the sink. There is just something so comforting and nostalgic about it. Not every house comes with one these days, and if yours does, count yourself blessed because it truly is a cozy little treasure.
I love my kitchen window. It instantly creates that warm vintage feeling of days gone by. If you’ve toured newer homes lately, you’ve probably noticed that many kitchens now place the sink in the island instead of beneath a window. And while that modern style is beautiful in its own way, there’s something especially cozy about standing at a sink while sunlight pours in through a kitchen window.
Today’s Modern Kitchen
I love standing at my kitchen sink doing dishes. Yes, I still wash many of them by hand instead of putting everything into the dishwasher. Crazy, I know. But honestly, I enjoy it.
There is something peaceful about looking out the window while the warm water runs and the house grows quiet around me. It almost becomes a form of therapy. It gives you a moment to clear your mind, daydream a little, watch the weather roll in, and enjoy the beauty of nature right outside your home.
Recently, I hung a four-tier bird feeder outside my kitchen window, and let me tell you, it has brought in far more than just the neighborhood birds. We now get visits from ducks, geese, and rabbits too, which absolutely delights me because I truly love watching them.
If you want an instant cottage feel, hang a bird feeder outside your kitchen window. Nothing says cozy cottage charm quite like watching little birds flutter around while your stand at the sink with the morning light pouring in.

I’ve also taken full advantage of my kitchen window by having fun with the decor around it. One of my favorite cozy decorating spots is actually the tops of the cabinets. It’s such a simple area to style, but it adds instant warmth and charm to a kitchen.
I love decorating mine with baskets, soft candlelight, and seasonal touches that make the space feel welcoming all year long. The gentle glow from the candles greets me in the morning, afternoon, and evening, and it brings such a peaceful feeling to the heart of the home.
One of the things I enjoy most is changing the decor with the seasons. It gives me something creative to look forward to and, if I’m being honest, a perfectly good excuse to go shopping for a few new cozy finds now and then.
Window Decor
If your kitchen window is low enough, don’t be afraid to decorate the space above it as well. It’s the perfect spot to add a little extra personality and charm.
I once had a shelf above mine, but in true decorating fashion, I’m always changing things around. Right now, I have these beautiful swan prints displayed above the window, and I absolutely love the vintage, peaceful feeling they bring to the space.
Can’t you just picture something like this in an old cozy cottage from years ago? The artwork is actually from Hobby Lobby, but they truly captured that timeless nostalgic charm so beautifully.

And then there’s the beautiful little ledge at the kitchen window itself. In my opinion, this space should absolutely be decorated too. It’s the perfect place for tiny framed pictures, miniature decor, small plants, or little treasures that bring warmth and personality into a kitchen.
One thing I’ve learned while decorating a cottage-style kitchen is that the curtain truly matters. It can completely change the feeling of the room. This plaid curtain instantly gave me that warm cottage look I was hoping to create and really became the focal point of the entire space. In many ways, I built the whole cozy feel of my kitchen around that one curtain.
And now we need to talk about baskets. . .because yes, I am absolutely obsessed with them. Baskeets add texture, warmth, and character in a way very few decor pieces can. The best part is that they’re inexpensive and easy to find at thrift stores, antique shops, and little secondhand shops.
If you want your home to feel cozy and cottage-inspired, baskets are almost a requirement.

And while we’re at it, let’s talk about plates too. Decorative plates mixed with baskets create that collected-over-time cottage look that feels warm, welcoming, and full of personality. I found one of my baskets and one of my plates for only a couple of dollars, proving that you do not need a huge decorating budget to create a cozy cottage home.
Honestly, some of the best cottage treasures are the ones found while slowly wandering through thrift stores and discovering pieces that simply make your heart happy.
Goodwill Basket and Plate
One of my favorite parts of cottage decorating is that it does not have to cost a fortune. In fact, some of the coziest pieces in my kitchen came from simple thrift store finds. I purchased one of my baskets and one of my decorative plates for only a couple of dollars, and together they instantly added that warm cottage charm I love so much.
There are so many beautiful baskets and vintage-style plates tucked away in thrift stores just waiting to be discoverd. I always take my time browsing because you never know when you’ll find the perfect cozy little treasure that makes your home feel warm, collected, and full of personality.
