Simple Ways to Create a Cozy Cottage Corner in Your Home
Here is what is happening today at the cottage. . .
One thing that you will discover when looking at my content, is that I don’t try to perfect things for the aesthetic. I make it real, lived in and just a little bit imperfect. I don’t live in a perfect world or have a perfect life so I like to create style in my home that feels the exact same way.
When someone comes in my home, I want it to feel like you can spill your drink and the world will not end. You don’t have to take your shoes off and it is okay to miss the mat where you wipe your feet.
As a psychology major and life coach, I get that all people do not tik by the same clock, so I understand if this style is not for the minimal and structured at heart. But it still might inspire you to create what you like for your particular style and that is perfectly fine. I will be happy to take my shoes off at your house.;)
Since my faith is the center of my life, you will see how I have included this in my every day design. It brings me peace and calmness. Whatever makes your heart jump for joy should be what you include in this area. Family pictures are also important to me so you will find these all throughout my home.
The world is hectic, and often traveling in a direction that is too fast for me. I just crave peace and comfort all around, so I approach my home with a laid back cozy cottage style. My house is not in fact a cottage style home. However, as I continue to crave that cozy cup of tea feeling, I am helping this home to become a cottage in the making. I am also not British but I often talk in my “british” accent!! :)
Isn’t this corner fabulous in a comfy way? It looks like if you go stand there it will surely provide a hug that erases the worries of the day! Just beautiful. This view has the sun just peeking in and giving a sense that happiness can still be found. . .
Now I realize this corner may be too much for some, and that is understandable. But cottage style often leans towards a kind of cozy maximalism, layering warmth and comfort. Do what makes you happy though. You can create a look that might be less and still create that welcome home to the cottage vibe.
Baskets scream cottage. If you lay a soft messy blanket with the basket, well you’ve got a cottage piece that didn’t cost a fortune, was easy to create and left you a big return. I am a basket collector and yes, I have to be a little careful so I don’t find myself tripping over them, but they are the heart of a good cottage home.
A sitting chair is gold for your cozying up look in a cottage corner. The marveous thing about this kind of furniture is that you can find them in thrift stores and estate sales easily. They tend to not be expensive which is a win. This chair was my husbands grandfathers and that makes it so much more special. I like to imagine him throwing his clothes over it after a hard day of work. Maybe he sat in it early in the morning when putting his shoes on to head out to his day.
I use it for extra seating when family comes over but in the meantime it serves as a wonderful piece of decor with history and charm. I added a throw and a Jesus pillow and now it is a masterpiece!
Now, let’s go talk about the amazing treasures I have found that really create the character and stories of this area. First things first, my love for shelves helps to make this area magical because we can layer so many wonderful pieces that will have a tale to tell.
These two shelves are from Lowes and they were very inexpensive. I added the brackets which were also not pricey and I have a glorious place to fill with treasures.
Wall decor, vases, plants, miniatures and candles can all be lovely here. I might add that vintage books are a great addition and I realize I need to get on the search for some to add to this spot.
I found both of these vintage looking pieces at Hobby Lobby and they really create the cottage look I am always desiring. The brass color with the muted picture just brings a sense of harmony to my day. I will share a few other pieces I embellished these plain shelves with. Personality, charm and storytelling come to life.
Then there is the elegant stand that looks like I got it from a secret garden but it actually came from Hobby Lobby. It is beyond precious and I have to mention the vase holding the paper flowers. They were given to me for my 60th birthday by my mom because I started decorating with more “neutral colors”. Funny thing is, that stage did not last very long!
However, these are absolutely gorgeous and fit the cottage charm in every way. This is where they will live and stay for a very long time.
Add a lamp for the darling style of light that keeps the darkness out of your life.
We can’t forget the beautiful wall above the stand and below the shelf. This is one of my favorite places to decorate because you can layer with so many creative pieces as well as mix and match.
I found a dream tin that was made for the cottage world. I filled it with delicate tiny pink flowers and it completes the exact vision I had.
If you really want to create a cottage area, go to any thrift store and rummage through the plate section. You will find the sweetest pieces that are the perfect accessory to add to something grand such as this tin.
I hung mine next to the flowers and I added a tiny string with one branch of flowers and glued it to the plate to give it a new life charm. This plate was .99 cents but the results of love are big.
Well friends, that is what is happening at the cottage today. I hope you enjoyed this tiny journey on how to create a cozy, cottage sitting space in your home.
Remember to be true to yourself when you dress up your home. There is no right or wrong way and we all have different taste so do what brings you joy.
Have a blessed day until we meet again at my cottage home.
Love,
Carrie
